Should I cut down a boxelder tree?

I just bought a house, and somebody had planted a boxelder tree next to the stairs on the front porch. The tree is currently 5-6 feet tall. A friend of mine recommended I cut it down, because it would attract the boxelder bugs to infest my house. Admittedly, I know very little about plants and pests. Also, is it a bad idea that the tree is planted so close to the house?
