Does anyone know the legal stuff on wage cuts?

my partner had �200 per week taken from his wage which he had no idea was going to happen, there was no negotiation it was like it or lump it, and it came into effect less than a month later, it was a hard knock to take, can they do that sort of thing at the drop of a hat?
