You're right. Cu (II) is the more stable form in this case. Look at the entries for Copper (II) chloride and compare it with copper (I) chloride on wikipedia for a more elaborate description. Pay particular attention to the solubility of these two products. I'm guessing you haven't talked about redox reactions in cl yet?
